Reading Challenge

Students who read more develop better writing skills.  They are exposed to new vocabulary and an  authentic variety of sentence structures.

Reading Challenge is my year-long assignment that challenges my students to read more!

Here are the rules of my Reading Challenge:

1. Students have a reading goal every quarter (nine week grading period).  On-level students need to read four books a quarter, and advanced students need to read six books.

  1. 2.Every nine week period, students will earn two** grades for these books.

  2. a.One class work grade each quarter will be labeled Reading Challenge 1-4.  This grade includes 4 or 6 finished books and 7 literature letters.

  3. b.**One test/project grade will be an independent book project.  (This assessment grade is only per semester NOT per quarter).

3. Books read in class or with other teachers count towards the final goal.  Teachers can initial in these cases.

4. Books should be grade-level appropriate. Sorry, no Magic Treehouse or Dr. Seuss.  However, the student can choose any subject or genre he or she wants as long as his or her parents approve, and it is grade-level appropriate.

5. In general, students earn 1 book credit for each bound book that they read.  However, if a student reads larger books (200+ pages), they can earn 1 book credit for every 200 pages of COMPLETED books.
